Summary

[edit]
Description
English: New Zion Missionary Baptist Church, 318 High Street at Orange Street, Buffalo, New York, October 2020. A paragon example of 1970s-style modernism as adapted to ecclesiastical architecture, the design of New Zion sees Niagara Falls-based architect Wallace V. Moll working in much simpler terms than his much better-known St. John Baptist Church on Goodell Street - exemplifying this are a regime of sleek lines intersecting at right angles and an austere façade punctured only by a sextet of understated narrow windows. Adding a bit of visual pizzazz is the asymmetrical roofline whose pitch is oriented at a 45-degree angle relative to the footprint of that portion of the building. A relatively new congregation among the African-American churches on the East Side of Buffalo, New Zion traces its origins to the evangelizing efforts of charismatic preacher S. K. Lewis, who beginning in 1959 preached services first in a now-demolished house on Howard Street and then in the former home of the First Federal Savings & Loan Assocation at the corner of High and Peach Streets, which is still in use by the congregation as their social hall. The present church building seen here was dedicated in 1976.
