I may be pardoned for giving a briefdescription of my homestead, its surroundingscenery, and the neighbours, with whom Ishared the dangers out of which a mercifulProvidence delivered us. Brighton-placeFarm lies about a mile south from the Omatachurch, on a road branching out of the mainsouthern road. This road is continued pastmy house for several miles into the bush,towards the foot of Mount Egmont; buthaving a branch road, a short distance frommy house, winding round into the main roadagain—the junction being at the Omata Inn.Out of this, in a straight line with the inn,there branched another road, leading in itswinding course past several settlers homesteadsinto the mountain road, not far from Burtonshill. On the mountain road was Batapihipihi,a small native pah, surrounded by Maorireserve land. I am thus particular in describing these

Myhouse is pleasantly situated on slightly risingground ahove, and but a few chains from theroad. The country around is rather high,above the level of the sea, being for the mostpart open towards the shore, with severalnicely cultivated farms in the distance—havingcleared bush land on all sides—still with asufficient number of resei-ved spots of standingevergreen trees to be a striking feature in thelandscape. We enjoyed many fine and delight-ful views. The open roadstead with the shipsat anchor, the steamers frequently passingand touching at New Plymouth, the militarybarracks and the flag-staff could all be seen.The white limestone cliffs of Mokau, frequentlyglaring in the sunhght, called to mind thechalk cliffs of dear old England—Beachy Head,and other favourite localities at home Our farm was our pride.
