Description

On this day across New Zealand, families have slept off their Christmas and Boxing Day feasts and hit the busy roads for their summer holiday. The exodus to beaches, baches or campgrounds has a long tradition in New Zealand, although some things have indeed changed. In days past it was by train that happy campers made their city escape.

As Te Ara notes, in the early 1920s (when New Zealand’s population was only just over 1 million) New Zealand Railways was carrying 28 million passengers a year. Holiday times were hectic: "on Christmas Eve in 1938, 16 express trains (including eight bound for Auckland) swept more than 11,000 travellers out of Wellington in a single day."
