ederate cavalry charge near Raleigh. He was presentat the surrender of Johnston to Sherman. After the war General Logan settled at Richmond, Virginia,and engaged in the practice of the law. About 1878, he organ-ized a syndicate of New York and Richmond capitalists for thepurpose of consolidating various railroads in the South into aharmonious system. At that time the Richmond and DansvilleCompany controlled about three hundred miles of road. Withintwo years, under the direction of General Logan, it had securedmore than two thousand miles, and, as the Southern Railway,is now one of the great railroad systems of the country. General Logan is now equally well known in Richmond andNew York, as well as elsewhere throughout the country. He is amember of various social and business organizations, prominentamong them being the Richmond Chamber of Commerce, andthe Westmoreland and Commonwealth clubs of Richmond,and the Manhattan Club of New York, of which last-named heis a non-resident member.

HENRY D. McCORD THE McCord family of Scotland is kin to the clan MacDonald,the Lords of the Isles, and is one of the most distinguishedin the Highlands. The American branch of it is descended fromJames McCord, who flourished in Argyleshire in the seventeenthcentury. His son John married Sarah MacDougall, and had ason James, who married a cousin, Sarah McCord. The sons ofthis latter couple came to America at the middle of the last cen-tury, and settled in Westchester County, New York, where theirdescendants are numerous at this day. One of these sons wasBenjamin McCord of Scarsdale, New York. His second wife wasCatherine Devoe, of the well-known New York family of thatname, and one of their sons was Jordan H. McCord. The latterwas twice married, his second wife being Rachel Tompkins, aniece of Governor and Vice-President D. D. Tompkins. Theirson, Lewis McCord, married Nancy Mangam, and lived at SingSing.
