He was educated at a private school atAmherst, Massachusetts, at another at Winchester, Connecticut,at Phillips Exeter Academy, and at Amherst College. After twoyears in the last-named institution he left it, in June, 1876, toenter his fathers law office in New York city as a student. Forthree years he studied diligently under capable parental direc-tion, and then was admitted to practice at the bar, in Brooklyn,in September, 1879. Thereafter, as we have said, he devoted his attention unwaver-ingly to his chosen profession. He was interested in politics,society, and other things, but not one of them was ever per-mitted to lead him away from his work in his office and in court.Thus he made sure of retaining all the clients he gained, andthrough almost every one he gained to secure others. For pre-eminently in law devotion to duty is the highest recommendationto patronage. His practice has from the first been chiefly in 160

HECTOR MORISON HITCHINGS 161 controverted cases, and during the sessions of court he has beenalmost daily in the court-room, arguing, examining, and in gen-eral trying cases. His outside interests have comprised a school trusteeship atGravesend for many years, and membership in the campaigncommittee of the Young Mens Republican Club, in 1884. Hehas also for some years been a member of the Session of theBrick Presbyterian Church, New York. His business connec-tions comprise the Hide and Leather Bank, the HitchingsHomestead Property, the Cuba Grold Mining and Milling Com-pany, the Ely and Ramsay Company, the Newark Hygienic IceCompany, Dan Tallmadges Sons Company, and the Travelersand Traders Protective League. He has conducted cases beforethe Supreme Court of the United States, and, of course, beforethe highest State courts. Mr. Hitchings made his home at Gravesend, with his par-ents, until the summer of 1884. At that time he was married toMiss Minnie Lyman, daughter of the Hon. John D
