er of the DuaneStreet Church of the same faith, where he was a singer in thechoir. In 1831 he left the church with many other members,and founded the Greene Street Church, where he was prominent inSunday-school work. Two years later he removed his member-ship to the Vesey Street Church, and remained in it all the restof his life, going with it to Seventh Avenue near FourteenthStreet, where it was known as the Central Methodist Church,and is now the Metropolitan Tabernacle. Besides his proficiencyas a choir singer, he was a fine performer on the flute, violin, andvioloncello. He was twice married. His first wife was Clarissa Baldwin,daughter of Timothy Baldwin of Connecticut. He was marriedto her at Newark, New Jersey, in 1837, and she died in 1850,leaving him three daughters and one son, all of whom are nowliving. In 1855 he was married to Louisa Lynch. She died in1888, and thereafter his own health rapidly failed. He died at hishome in West Nineteenth Street, on September 11, 1890. i

WARD BRYAN CHAMBERLIN rpHE family of Chamberlin, or at least that particular familyJ- of that name which is under present consideration, wasplanted in this country two and a quarter centuries ago. Thatlong space of time has, however, been spanned by only fourgenerations, of which the fourth is still in strong middle age. The progenitor of it was Jehu Chamberlin, who came hitherfrom England in the year 1675. He was the great-grandfatherof the subject of this sketch. Jehu Chamberlin had a son towhom he gave the name of Judah, and Judah Chamberlin inturn had a son to whom he gave the name of Calvin. Calvin Chamberlin, a man of great versatility of talents andforce of character, lived at Amenia, Dutchess County, New York,one of the most charming regions in the eastern United States^adapted alike to action and repose, to the pursuits of industryand to the contemplative retirement of the philosopher.
