hich he amassed a large fortune^ At thetime of his death he was president of the Wayside, the Eagleand the Amsterdam Knitting Mills, and was officially connectedwith a large number of manufacturing concerns, banks, andother corporations. Just before his death he was prominent ybefore the trade as the originator and promoter of the recentlyformed combination of American knit-goods manufacturerswhich includes some fifty mill-owners from the Hudson andMohawk valleys and Vermont, extending as far as North Caro- ^IrRowe was very religious man, and his; gifts to charitableorganizations and churches were princely. The Methodist Epis-copal church and parsonage at Hartford, New York were erectedas a memorial to his daughter, as was also the building used bythe Mohawk and Hudson River Humane Society at Troy. Mr.Rowe presented to the Salvation Army at Troy a twenty-five-thousand-dollar building, and gave large sums tc> the. YoungMens Christian Association, the Womans College Settlement of 292

WILLIAM H. KOWE, JR. 293 New York, and many others. He died suddenly at AtlanticCity, New Jersey, on April 21, 1898. His widow, who was MissFrances J. Wood, and to whom he was married in 1866, surviveshim. Their son, William H. Eowe, Jr., the subject of this sketch,was born at Hartford, New York, on November 30, 1868. Hewas educated at Fort Edward Institute and Syracuse University,Syracuse, New York. He did not finish his college course, butat an early age elected to begin his business training. He wentto work under his fathers direction to master the details of thevarious enterprises with which the elder Mr. Eowe was con-nected, and to which he was expected to succeed. The youngman showed remarkable business aptitude from the start, andwas soon taken into partnership, under the firm-name of W. H.Eowe & Son. Upon the death of his father, Mr. (now Colonel)Eowe came into control of all of his interests, and is now presidentof the Wayside Knitting Company of Troy, which operates oneo
