HENRY MELVILLE AMONG the first colonists from Great Britain who settled-TX. at Charlestown, Massachusetts, was a family named Mel-ville, which name has since become widely spread and highlyhonored throughout the nation. From it in time descendedJosiah H. Melville, a typical New England farmer of theintelligent, thrifty, and progressive class that contributed somuch to the upbuilding not only of New England but of thewhole United States. He married Nancy R. Nesmith, a memberof the Nesmith family which had for many years been establishedat Londonderry, New Hampshire, and these two made theirhome at Nelson, New Hampshire, in the valley of the AshuelotRiver and within sight of Mount Monadnock. Mr. and Mrs.Melville could reckon among their ancestors at least a dozen menwho had fought in the various colonial wars, and at least tenwho had fought in the patriot army in the War of the Revolution.
