tion of railroads. He was nomi-nated and elected to the Forty-ninth Congress. During hisservices in Congress he was an influential member of variouscommittees. For fifteen years he was one of the managersof the National Home for Volunteers, and was instrumental inestablishing two of them. For a number of years he was presi-dent of the National Union League of America; and he is amember of the Grand Army of the Republic, of the VeteranLegion, Scott Legion, Military Order of Foreign Wars, NationalBoard of Steam Navigation, Shipping League of New York, andthe Masonic Fraternity. He has also filled the offices of presi-dent and vice-president of a number of railroads, which compa-nies were incorporated and built under his management. Inwhatever sphere of action, he is judicious, energetic, and forceful. He has been twice married. His first wife was a Miss KateDe Losey, niece of Commodore Van Vorhees. His second wifewas a Miss Grace Ashton of Philadelphia, who has borne himthree daughters.

HENRY NEWMAN THE modem practical business world has its sensations andromances, as well as the old days of chivalry. The rise ofmen from poverty and subordinate places to wealth and poweras leaders of commerce and industry, and the daring and startlingstrokes by which they sometimes achieve their successes, are ofas fascinating interest as the rise of political empires and theachievements of military leaders. A case in point is that of Henry Newman, who was born inWiirtemberg, Germany, and came to this country as a youth in1844. He began his business career as a clerk. His parentswere poor and he was dependent upon his own exertions. Hesecured a place in the dry-goods house of Bernheimer Brothers,and, by dint of indomitable energy, industry, and extraordinarybusiness ability, worked his way steadily upward, until, in 1863, hewas admitted to partnership, the firms name being then changedto Bernheimer & Newman.
