33 Third Annual Report of the Social ServiceCommittee October, 1922—December, 1923 HE past year has been the brightest and most prosperous one in the history of the Social Service Department. This is in large part due to the cheerful devotion and untiringefforts of Miss Harriet Jane Smith, the Director of the Depart-ment, and her loyal assistants. Miss Smiths report so adequatelycovers the work done by this Department that there is no needfor my adding to what she has said. In behalf of the Committee, I wish to extend its grateful ap-preciation to the workers for their helpful co-operation, whichis always so essential to the success of the work. As chairman, I wish to express my gratitude to the membersof the Committee for their unselfish interest and valuable advice.
