Summary

[edit]
Description
English: "The fourth performance this season of the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and Empire Theatre Dramatic School took place at the Empire Theatre Thursday afternoon. The Last Visit, a one-act play by Hermann Sudermann, and The Eye of the Needle, a play in three acts by Henry Kirk, came to their first production in this country at this performance. […] The Eye of the Needle, a three-act play by Henry Kirk, was far more suitable to the talents of the young people. They played with a snap and vigor that was commendable. The story of the play is that of a young stock broker who remains steadfast to his principles of right doing, even to the spoliation of his fortune. His wife, who thought she could not do without the riches to which she had become accustomed, decides at the very end that her love for her husband is greater than her love for wealth. The cast: Franklin Dennie…Philip Perry; Robert E.L. Travers…Philip Barrison; Mr. Bonner…Frank S. Robbins; Mr. Peake…Herbert D. Delmore; A Butler…Grant Ervin; Katherine Dennie…Edna Baker; Mrs. Wilson-Hume…Rachel Ridgly; Olive Dennie…Jean Marcet [=Anna Marcet Haldeman]. ¶ Nothing but praise can be given to this performance. The acting and the general atmosophere were delightful. The love scenes savored of youth and artlessness. The sincerity and simplicity of the performance were remarkable. Charles Jehlinger had charge of both productions and did his work well." New York Dramatic Mirror, 19th February 1910, p. 7, from "The Academy Matinée: Students of the Empire School Produce Two New Plays" (italics added and format of cast list changed slightly).
