Summary

[edit]
Description
English: A rare gem - originally Mersey Railway Class I 0-6-4T No.1 'The Major' (Beyer Peacock No.2605 of 1885), one of 9, with condensing apparatus for working suburban trains through the Mersey Tunnel. In 1903 all bar one were sold for industrial/dock use and four to J & A Brown's Richmond Vale Railways (Including No.1 as their No.5) which served many collieries. These 4 were withdrawn in 1924-34. No.1 was withdrawn in 1931 but remained in store until 1936 when it was sold to the Abermain Colliery Railway; it was finally withdrawn in 1942 at Hexham Colliery when it was used at Hexham Colliery as a buffer stop until 1973! It was subsequently bought for preservation but as yet is unrestored - a great shame. Pictured at Trainworks, the New South Wales Railway Museum, Thirlmere, 31 March 2016. It is notable that 3 were sold to the Alexander (Newport & South Wales) Docks & Railway and these became GWR locos in 1923; they were witdrawn 1923-27.
