Summary

[edit]
Description
English: NSWR Harold Young/Beyer Peacock AD60 Class 4-8-4+4-8-4 No.6040 (Beyer Peacock No.7542 of 1956) at Trainworks, the New South Wales Railway Museum, Thirlmere, 31 March 2016. Although 50 were ordered, financial difficulties meant that NSWR cancelled the order after only 42 were completed (in 1952-56), However, to avoid cancellation charges, NSWR agreed to pay for the components already manufactured and these were supplied to the NSWR as spare parts on the condition that they would only be used as such. However, so many parts were available and due for a need for more heavy freight engines, NSWR surreptitiously erected one more in 1958 but gave it the same number as an existing loco hoping Beyer Peacock wouldn't notice and invoke the cancellation charges. The ruse worked! The Class AD60's were the only Beyer Garratt design to have cast steel beds. They were immensely capable engines and the last was not withdrawn until the end of steam on the NSWR in 1973.
