Summary
[edit]DescriptionNew River (Mouth of Wilson, Virginia, USA) 2 (30441899165).jpg |
(looking downstream) Despite its name, the New River is one of the oldest watercourses in the world. It runs over 350 miles through North Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia. It drains into the Kanawha River, a major tributary of the Ohio River. The course of the New River is moderately meandering, which is odd considering that it cuts across many erosion-resistant bedrock ridges in the Appalachian Mountains of eastern America. The Appalachian Mountains formed during the Late Paleozoic (specifically, the Pennsylvanian - over 300 million years ago). The erosive power of the river was strong enough to maintain a channel as the mountains were uplifted. Rivers that existed before mountains formed are called antecedent streams. Locality: view from Rt. 93 bridge, east of the town of Mouth of Wilson, near the southern margin of Grayson County, southwestern Virginia, USA More info. at: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_River_(Kanawha_River) and en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_rivers_by_age |
