Fiers. 835 to 866. 592 GRADES OF INTELLIGENCE. 2. Polypi.—The polj^pi (zoophytes of earlier authors) aregelatinous or membranaceous creatures of vaiious forms, butgenerally tubular. Their structure is yqvj simple. In generalthey have only a single aperture, which serves as a mouth,surrounded by from eight to twelve tentacula or feelers.With the latter they seize their prey and convey it to themouth. Some of these animals increase by means of ova^ butgenerally they are propagated by gemmoe or buds, whichw^hen fully developed are separated from the parent by anatural fissure. They are capable of locomotion, but generallyremain attached to rocks or to the bottom of the sea. Inappearance, they resemble certain plants, and one species iscalled the sea-nettle. 3. Radtata.—Another step upward brings us among theradiata, of which the star-fish is an example.
