Tage 24 ^ The Chalmette Terminals of theSouthern Railway System, at New Or-leans are the only steamship docks onthe Mississippi River of the slip type.The slip is 1,800 feet long, 300 feet wideand 30 feet in depth. It is capable ofhandling six large vessels comfortably atone time. Two reinforced concrete docksline the sides of this slip. Dock No. 1 isa single-story structure, 1,300 feet longand 120 feet wide. It has an area of156,000 square feet. Dock No. 2 is atwo-story structure, 1,680 feet in lengthwith a ground floor width of 130 feetand a second story width of 119 feet.Its area is 418,320 square feet. Tracksalso serve the second floor of this shed. The facilities of the Southern RailwaySystem furnish berthing space of624,320 feet, on which general cargocan be handled direct from ships tocars and vice versa. Space is alsoavailable for storage and handling ofboth export and import freights. ABOVE: A BANANA CONVEYOR
