Summary

[edit]
Description
English: New Meeting Street sign A little history in cast iron: the New Meeting House was opened as a place of worship for Presbyterians in 1732. Under the noted chemist Joseph Priestley, discoverer of oxygen and one of its two resident ministers, its theological position became more liberal and akin to Unitarianism. Rioters in 1791, incensed at Priestley's support for the French and American revolutions, destroyed both the meeting house with its valuable library and Priestley's home and laboratory, forcing him to flee the country. Arjen Bax has pointed out the curiosity that both Ns on this sign are upside down: the serifs that should be at the upper left of the character are now at the lower right. What would John Baskerville, the great Birmingham typefounder and friend of Priestley, have thought of that?
