Summary

[edit]
Description

On 30 July 1980 New Hebrides formally declared independence, becoming the Republic of Vanuatu. Originally settled around 1200AD, Vanuatu was named New Hebrides by Captain James Cook in 1774. In 1888 both British and French authorities took official control of the islands and operated a dual administration. Known as the Pandemonium, British and French governments ran separate streams including education and justice systems. This was still in effect up to independence in 1980.

This 1860 map of New Hebrides is a detail from a larger item that includes Banks Island, Sandwich Islands, Torres Island and others. It identifies a number of islands and their estimated altitudes, measured in feet, and prominent geographical features; a coral reef and active volcano. Known transport routes between islands, inscribed as ‘food passage’ are also noted. The map forms part of a series that were transferred to Archives New Zealand from the Department of Lands and Survey, most of which were reproduced on aperture cards. Before being photographed, the face of each map was renumbered in black-felt-tip-pen. The New Hebrides map above was numbered “G77”.
