| Description |
English: New Era Cap Company, 160 Delaware Avenue at West Huron Street, Buffalo, New York, January 2021. Though the glass-and-steel frontispiece is a relatively recent (c. 2006) addition, the main body of the building was erected in 1956 from a design by the local firm of James, Meadows & Howard, working in conjunction with Eggers & Higgins of New York. It's an interesting example of an early iteration of the International Style whose architecture is considerably indebted to the Art Deco and Streamline Moderne aesthetics of the decades immediately preceding: witness the curved chrome trim above the side entrance at left, as well as the tiered or terraced setbacks on the lateral elevation. The building was originally home to the Buffalo branch of the Federal Reserve Bank, which had been located in the High Neoclassical-styled former headquarters of Manufacturers & Traders Bank at the corner of Main and Swan Streets until that building's demolition. The Buffalo Federal Reserve was dissolved in 2008, by which time the corporate offices and flagship store of the New Era Cap Company - licensed manufacturer of headwear and other apparel for Major League Baseball, the National Football League, the National Basketball Association, and other sporting concerns - had moved into the space. |
