Summary

[edit]
Description
English: During the spring freshet, 6 million litres of water, 9/10ths the volume of Niagara Falls, cascades over the falls every second. A few months later, virtually all the water is diverted to the power plant. Grand Falls, New Brunswick, Canada

The River St. john comes from far off in Quebec, Maine and New Brunswick heading south towards the Bay of Fundy, 400 km from here.

In 1686, Monseigneur de Saint-Vallier, the second bishop of New France, made an arduous five month visit to Acadia. He was greatly impressed by the region and noted in particular the breathtaking Grand Falls where he stopped on 17 May. His account of the journey was published in Paris two years later. Determined to strengthen the Church in Acadia, he established missions for the Natives and colonists, and took an avid interest in their activities. His second visit to the region in 1689 was the last one made by a Roman Catholic bishop until 1795.
