| Description |
English: Down empties on East Coast Main Line north of New Barnet. View southward, towards King's Cross; ex-Great Northern ECML, King's Cross - Peterborough - Doncaster etc. The train (headed by BR Standard 9F 2-10-0 No. 92149) is on the new Down Slow line approaching the former Greenwood Box on the recently (1959) widened section between New Barnet and Potters Bar. For over 100 years the ECML had carried a constant heavy traffic of coal from the collieries in the North Midlands and beyond, to fuel the utilities, industries and homes of London and the South-East: here a train of empty wagons (of the newer 16-ton steel variety) is returning to the New England Yards at Peterborough, on their way back to the collieries. |
