Summary

[edit]
Description
English: New Asia Missionary Baptist Church, 692 East Utica Street, Buffalo, New York, March 2021. An example of the "stripped Classical" school of architecture popular in the beginning quartile of the 20th century, the building's boxy brick façade is adorned with painted detailing representative of Greco-Roman tropes in simplified form: an engaged pediment tops two pairs of Doric pilaster strips, with a pair of jack-arched, keystone-topped windows in between. More interesting still is the roof: the flat-topped parapet on the façade is backed by multiple side-oriented gables undulating up and down toward the rear of the building. The exact date of its construction is not entirely clear: the building appears in the 1915 New Century Atlas of Greater Buffalo, yet the earliest evidence of any particular occupant does not trace back any further than 1920, at which date it served as meeting hall for the Lake Erie #435, Hobah #621, and Delta #597 lodges of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. The Delta Temple, as it was called, continued as home to various local I.O.O.F. groups until 1968, when it was sold to its present owner for conversion into a church.
