June 8th is World Ocean Day, and starting this month, NOAA has a more accurate analysis of global phytoplankton concentrations, also known as "ocean color." This image shows the average global phytoplankton concentration for the month of May 2015.

Description
English: June 8th is World Ocean Day, and starting this month, NOAA has a more accurate analysis of global phytoplankton concentrations, also known as "ocean color." This image shows the average global phytoplankton concentration for the month of May 2015. Blue areas have very low amounts of phytoplankton; green areas have very high concentrations, and are often areas that support large fish populations since phytoplankton are the base of most oceanic food webs. The new ocean color product, developed by scientists at NOAA's Center for Satellite Applications and Research, uses data from the Suomi NPP satellites's VIIRS instrument, and continues ocean color monitoring missions that began in the 1990's with the Coastal Zone Color Scanner Experiment mission.
