Description
English: Nevers (Nièvre)

Chapelle Sainte-Marie, ou chapelle de la Visitation de la Sainte Vierge (XVIIe siècle).

C'est le seul vestige d'un ensemble occupé par le couvent de la Visitation*.

Construite entre 1639 et 1643, la chapelle est une exemple, assez rare en France, d'architecture baroque.

La duchesse Louise-Marie de Gonzague*, posa la première pierre en juin 1639.

A l'intérieur, le retable est réalisé en 1641 par le sculpteur de la façade, Claude Collignon. Il reprend l'organisation de la façade.

  • L'ordre du couvent de la Visitation fut fondé en 1610, il s'inscrit dans le mouvement de création des nouvelles congrégations religieuses issues de la Contre Réforme.
  • Louise-Marie de Gonzague-Nevers deviendra reine de Pologne par alliance. Elle épousera successivement deux rois de Pologne, Ladislas IV Vasa en 1646 puis Jean II Casimir Vasa, demi-frère de Ladislas, en 1649. Elle n'aura aucune descendance.
