There is a charm about this old town that isindefinable. No one seems to be in a hurry.After the strenuous fife of sight-seeing the touristhas pursued amid the art galleries of Munich, therestfulness of Ratisbon is delightful. Moreover, it is a paradise for the student ofarchitecture, and has hundreds of sermons instones for those who know how to read. Those NEUSCHWANSTEIN AND HOHEN-SCHWANGAU The first built by King Ludwig II., 1869-1?resembles the Wartburg on a larger scale.

BAVARIA 75 marvellous arches in the quadrilateral of the oldmonastery, which has now become an accessory ofthe Palace and Chapel of the Prince of Thurmand Taxis, are all different in design. Situated at the junction of the Danube and theRegen, a famous stone bridge unites this city withits suburb Stadt-am-Hof The bridge has sixteenarches, and is about 600 yards in length. Whenit was built in the thirteenth century it wasdeemed one of the wonders of the world. It issaid that the designer of the bridge and thearchitect of the Cathedral were great rivals. Thearchitect of the Cathedral made a bet that he wouldfinish the Cathedral before the bridge was com-pleted. The designer of the bridge accepted thechallenge. In order to win, he saw that it wasnecessary to call in the aid of the Prince of Dark-ness. Satan duly appeared, and promised to furtherhis wishes on condition that he should receive thefirst three beings who crossed the bridge. Bydiabolic help the bridge was finished long beforet
