| Description | In 1537-40 William Paulet, Marquess of Winchester, built a gatehouse through the south range of the abbey buildings on the site of the old refectory to provide access to the cloister (seen through the archway) which he had made into the courtyard of his mansion. Left and right of the arch can been seen the stubs of the brick turrets with which he decorated the entrance to his home. |
