Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Netherlands West Indies. Curaçao. View of the St. Anna Bay harbour of Curacao's capital Willemstad with in the right foreground the docks of the Curacao Trading Company and another complex of that company along the waterfront on the left side of the bay. On the hills at left the oil-storage tanks for refuelling ships at Caracas bay.

The ship in the foreground is the MS "Palatia", a German ship that from 1928 maintained a regular service of Hamburg-American Paketfahrt Actien-Gesellschaft (HAPAG) in the Caribbean. This ship was sold to the Soviet Union in 1940, then captured again by the Kriegsmarine in 1941 and sunk in October 1942. The photo therefore dates from before 1940, possibly also before 1939.
The white passenger ship is the Steuben (ship, 1923). Originally built as the MUNCHEN. 13,325 gross tons, length 526.9ft x beam 65ft, two funnels, two masts, twin screw and a speed of 15 knots. Accommodation for 171-1st, 350-2nd and 558-3rd class passengers. Built by Vulcan Werke, Stettin, she was launched for North German Lloyd of Bremen on 25th Nov.1922. On 11th Feb.1930 she was gutted by fire at New York, sank in the Hudson River, was refloated, patched up at Brooklyn and sailed to Bremen in ballast. Rebuilt at Bremen to 14,690 gross tons with accommodation for 214-cabin, 358-tourist and 221-3rd class passengers, converted from coal to oil fuel and renamed GENERAL VON STEUBEN. She resumed Bremen - Southampton - New York sailings on 5th Feb.1931 and started her last voyage on this route on 16th Nov.1934. Subsequently used as a cruise ship, in 1938 she was renamed STEUBEN. In 1939 she became a German Navy accommodation ship at Kiel and in Aug.1944 started use as a transport for the wounded.
