r this they would fly up on to my shoulders, and take it outof my mouth, and placed half a barrel of fresh soil in their cage, from which they extracted theworms as they required them, .^t that time the French steamers called at Mauritius, Bourbonand the Seychelles, on their way to my birthplace, Marseilles. Just at day-break on the morningprior to our arrival at the latter place, the female died from the effects of the great heat, whilepassing through the Red Sea. The male bird was landed in splendid condition, and remainedor about a month at the .Acclimatization Society Gardens at Marseilles. I then made arrange- 323 merits with M. Milne-Edwards, Director of the Jardin des Plantes in Paris, presenting the birdto that institution, where it was placed in a very large aviary, 1 gave full instructions to thekeeper there how to feed it and look after it, and it thrived well, living for a period of five and ahalf years, and where I saw it several times during my different trips to Europe.

NEST OF LYRK-BIRD (ill sitU.) Only one egg is laid for a sitting. Typically they vary in form from oval to elongate o\ al, theshell being finely granulate and slightly lustrous. In ground colour they vary from a light stone-grey to deep purplish-brown, having short streaks, spots and blotches of different shades of deepslaty-grey and dark blackish-brown equally distributed over the surface of the shell. In somespecimens these markings predominate on the thicker end, where they form a distinct cap, or an 324 MENURID.E. ill-defined zone. Three specimens measure as follows:—Length (A) 2-52 x r6 inches; (B)2-52 X 177 inches; (C) 2-47 x 17 inches. The egg referred to by Mr. Savidge, taken fromthe former figured nest, in situ, and presented by him to the Trustees of the Australian Museum,is the most remarkable shaped Lyre-birds egg I have seen, being almost as round and aboutthe size of a tennis ball. It is of a pale purplish-grey ground colour, flecked, streaked, andblotched nearly unifo
