Text Appearing Before Image:
fallen decayed timber, sometimes near the base of atree in dense scrub. External diameter 8; inches. Eggs.—Clutch, two; sUghtly elliptical in shape; texture of shellfine; surface glossy; colour, pure white. Dimensions in inches of twoclutches: A(l) 1-14 X-85, (2) M2x-85; B (I) Ml x 95, (2) 1-06 x-84. Observations.-—This unique and strictly Austrahan form is pecuUarto the dense undergi-owths of South Queensland and the northern riverdistricts of New South Wales; but it has been observed as far southas Wollongong, about fifty miles south of Sydney. It is of terrestrialhabits, living entirely on the floors of the forest or scnib. A nest I found in the Big Sciub, Richmond River, which I believebelonged to the Orthonyx, or Log Rimner, was in a damp situationbetween the spurs of a tree in thick scrub. It was evidently in thecourse of constraction, and was composed entirely of fresh moss, and,as originally described by VeiTeaux, the entrance was on a level witlithe sm-face of the ground.
Text Appearing After Image:
.VESTS AND EGGS OF AUSTRAtlAN BIRDS. 2S.^ Although nests were obtained by Dr. Ramsays collectors in theRichmond River scnibs, in 1865-6, the Doctor did not describe theeggs till twenty years aftenvaxds. For the pair of eggs in my collection I am indebted to the indomi-table scrub himter, Mr. W. T. Bailej, who took a nest near PimpamaCreek, Queensland, 17th August. 1890. Tlie Spine-tailed Orthony.x would appear to have two laying seasons, principally the months July and August, and again Fobniai-y andMarch. However, eggs have been found during other months, becnu.soMr. H. R. Elveiy informs me he has taken eggs in January, April,May and Jime. But as Mr. Elvciy has been veiT assiduous in hisattentions to Log Runners in his locality, possibly some of the birdsmay have laid again, on account of their previous eggs having beenrobbed. On one occasion Mr. Elvery found a Log Runners nest in aclump of lawyer canes, about six feet from the groimd—a rather unusvialplace for the site of this bird
