Morbid Anatomy.—The morbid anatomy of these family ataxiasvaries as the case corresponds to the spinal or the cerebellar type. Thecases that conform strictly to Friedreichs syndrome show a posterolateralsclerosis analogous in distribution to that of progressive spastic ataxia.There is a decided sclerosis of the columns of Goll and Burdach, withshrinking of the cord in this region throughout its entire length. Thereis sclerosis of the crossed pyramidal tract, of Goivers tract, of the directcerebellar tract, of Lissauers tract, and frequently atrophy of the cells ofClarkes column. The posterior horn and its cells are shrunken and inrare cases the anterior cornual cells are degenerated.
