n the index and middle fingerswas adopted when spasm first developed, and for a time permitted acontinuation of clerical work. When seen later, the hand would begin tocramp after half a dozen words were written, as shown in the secondcut, and in a moment the spasm would become violent, the pen wouldfall, and the fingers and thumb would be extended as shown in the thirdcut. This was an aggravated case. Commonly, as soon as the spasmcauses uncertainty in writing the act is stopped and the spasm subsides.It may cause a great change in the writing, which tends to becomecramped and full of uncertainties and zigzags. The pen is forciblyjerked and thrust in various directions. At first, by steadying thewriting hand with the other, and adopting a thick penholder or onefitted with a ball held in the palm of the hand or with rings againstwhich the fingers are pressed in extension, writing may be continued fora time, but usually the spasm reappears.
