English: Neptune Building, Close Photo taken as a vertical panorama from the road deck of the High Level Bridge, above the River Tyne. The Neptune building on the Close is in the foreground. It was built as a Fish Market in 1880 by A.M. Fowler. It is now the 'Sea' nightclub. Above the south gate 1829418 is a statue of Neptune, flanked by Tyneside fishwives by George Burn http://pmsa.cch.kcl.ac.uk/NE/TWNE20.htm
Here is a photo taken from the same location in 1973, with the buildings looking in a poor state http://sine.ncl.ac.uk/view_image.asp?digital_doc_id=1745 Many of the buildings on the skyline from the Castle Keep on the left edge round to the north end of the Tyne Bridge are identified here 1654427 |
