Summary
[edit]DescriptionNepal - Sagamartha Trek - 010 - Prayer-carved rocks (497587812).jpg |
Many boulders and rock walls along the route were intricately carved and painted with the Tibetan Buddhist prayer "Om Mani Padme Hum" which means "Hail to the jewel in the lotus." You are supposed to walk around these (and all Buddhist monuments, stupas, monasteries and koras) clockwise, so the left-hand path. On the right, just behind me, you can see another common sight: carve tablets of stone, some regularly cut as these are, others left in whatever shape they were in, piled neatly into tiers and walls. As with many aspects of Buddhist devotion, the effort and workmanship that goes into all these is incredible and simply awe-inspiring. |
