Summary
[edit]DescriptionNeon sign 2WG Wagga.jpg |
English: Neon sign atop the building at south end of Fitzmaurice Street, Wagga Wagga, advertising the local commercial radio station. The "2" of the callsign indicates New South Wales, and "WG" is the suffix chosen by the broadcaster. The motif of radiating lightning strikes was commonly used by broadcasters in the 1930s–1940s, and on this sign flashes on and off, while the callsign remains illuminated. The sign was refurbished by volunteers and re-commissioned in December 2020 after being dormant for 20 years. The photo was taken from the Wollundry Bridge and the illuminated tubes superimposed from a picture taken late that night, as the sign is not turned on in daylight hours.
Radio station 2WG was founded in 1932 by Eric and Ida Roberts and Riverina Radio Broadcasting Company Ltd. with a power of 50 watts. By 1937 they had a 2 kilowatt transmitter and antenna well away from the city, while she studio complex remained at 16 Fitzmaurice Street. |
