Title |
Neolithic leaf-shaped arrowhead (ventral) |
||
Description |
English: Leaf-shaped flint arrowhead that has been bifacially reworked or retouched on the entire edge of both the dorsal and ventral faces. The reworking extends further onto the ventral surface from the point of the arrowhead, at the distal end, but the medial ridge of the flake obstructs further working on the dorsal face beyond the point. The bulb of percussion remains on the ventral face at the proximal end.
There is no cortex remaining on the flake and the flake would have been chosen particularly for an arrowhead as its medial ridge runs the length of the flake and will add strength to it, in use as well as in manufacture. This suggests it is a tertiary flake. The colour of the flint ranges from a grey to a white and the length to breadth ratio is about 3:2. Local leaf-shaped arrowheads were mass-produced from sites like Carn Brea from about 3800 BC, but this one may have been made earlier on the north coast from local beach pebbles. Bond (2004) illustrates a similar example on page 123, Fig.5.107, Type 3Ai, which he dates to the Earlier Neolithic, c.4000-3300 BC. |
