Title
neolithic flint scraper and borer
Description
English: Neolithic white flint scraper and borer dating between 3500BC and 1500BC. The distal working edge is curved with multiple retouchs and probably used as a scraper. The proximal end has been formed into a point suitable for use as a drill or borer. The flint has tiny inclusions of iron rich material, and larger ones similar to cortex, plus numerous pale grey areas. The ventral face has a large bulb of percusssion at the proximal point, the pattern on of conchoidal ripples is confusing possibly due to the hardness of some of the inclusions. The proximal end has had the striking platform removed by large strikes to both edges. These new edges have then been blunted by flaking and microflaking leaving a strong point at the proximal end. The combination of scraper and borer suggests that the tool may have been used to prepare hides for sewing into clothes, shelters, bags and other such things. It measures 42mm in length, 32mm in width and 9mm in thickness.
