Onthis level platform the reserves were probably waitingto take their ()lace in the fighting line, when thoseupon the crest had fallen. The central plateau is kidney-shaped, and is dividedinto two roughly equal parts by a transverse scarp otartificial construction. The eastern division, which hastwo complicated double approaches in close proximityto each other, is the first to be reached from theRoman road, and stands at a higher level than thewestern. It was probably occupied exclusively by thehuman inhabitants ; the western, into which the cattle-ways enter, being devoted to the herds. We shall,however, presently bring forward evidence that onlysuch a portion of the herds was kept at MaidenCastle as would suffice for the needs of the connnu-nit\ during the winter.
