oke and the other to Maddington, the road stands at a higher level than the land oneither side of it. At an earlier epoch this low-lyingland was under water, and clear evidence of thisfact may be seen in the cattle-tracks which descendfrom the higher ground to the valley below. Thepfround here on either side of the road has beentrodden into comparatively deep tracks in a preciselysimilar manner to those we have observed at OgburyCamp. At a later epoch it would appear that the waterin the valley subsided, and that neolithic man con-structed a dew-pond so as to continue to supply hisherds with water at the same spot. We here again,as at Ogbury, observe the care man took to try andprocure water for the cattle in such a position that itwas not necessary tor them to leave their traditionaltracks. The only difference between the two is thaithe dew-pond at Ogbury was built at the top of thehill, and the one we are now considering near Stone-henge was built in the valley. Presumably at this 64

Neolithic Dew-Ponds spot, so close to the Scicred grounds of Stonehenge, there was not the same danger to the herds as existedin the willey of the Avon near Ogbury Camp. If one looks in a southerly direction along this valleyone may see, at a point less than a quarter of a milel>eyond the de\v-))ond, that a small and comparativelymodern building has been erected ; this was constructedto contain the gearing of a pump. It would be interesting to know what is the actualdifference of the water level now, as compared withthe level at which the water stood when the cattlewere able to obtain their water in the valley, andsubsequently at the dew-pond. Stonehenge lies but a few hundred yards along theroad, and the fascinating and mysterious attractions ofthis structure are of so absorbing a nature that lew otthe passers-by observe the corrugations in the landwhich we have been attempting to describe. At the top of the gendy sloping side to this valley, and on the Amesbury side, a clump of tre
