Title |
Neolithic arrowhead: leaf shaped, possibly (plan and reverse). |
||
Description |
English: A knapped flint possible arrowhead. The arrowhead is a sub drop shape in plan and has a white patina, and has been burnt forming a crazed surface. The ventral face is slightly convex. There is no obvious bulb of percussion. The edges has small negative scars of re-touch. The centre of this surface has not been flaked. The dorsal surface, in profile is more convex than the dorsal surface. At the apex there is a patch of cortex remaining. The edges has re-touch scars. The object weighs 5.3g and measures 29.51mm long, 21.3mm wide and 9.94mm thick.
The shape in plan and re-touch suggests the object is a leaf-shaped arrowhead. However the bi-convex profile and cortex is not conducive for an arrowhead. This may be an unfinished leaf-shaped arrowhead which would date to the early to mid Neolithic period (c. -3500 to c. -1150) (Butler, C. 2005 Prehistoric Flintwork Tempus, p125). The fire-fracturing may have occurred recently or in prehistory. If it occurred in prehistory there are different theories way flint was burnt and the resemblance to an arrowhead is accidental. Fire-fractured flint may have been used in cooking, for example to create steam ovens, to be crushed to use as a temper in pottery, or to be used to create a sauna (Butler, 2005; 27). |
