Title
Neolithic: Loomweight
Description
English: An irregular carved loom weight of unknown date (most probably prehistoric (Neolithic - Iron Age) but due to the nature of the find a larger date range is suggested (3500BC - AD 1500). The weight is irregular (being slightly sub-rectangular) in plan and sub-rectangular in cross section. It has an off-centre perforated / drilled hole (diameter: 17.5mm). The hole is hour glass shaped due to it being drilled from bot the upper and lower faces. There are no obvious internal wear facets present. The external edge is relatively smooth and worn. The weight has been carved from a water worn Late Silurian or Devonian sandstone pebble common in North Herefordshire and South Shropshire. It is very difficult to date this type of artefact as they are common finds from most archaeological periods. This example is relatively light and small compared to others. Due to the archaeology in the area - and the style of the drilled hole a prehistoric date is preferred.

The loom weight measures 63.8mm length, 64.2mm width, is 17.1mm thick, and weighs 158.6 grams.
