Title |
Neolithic: Leaf Shaped Arrowhead |
||
Description |
English: Incomplete leaf shaped flint arrowhead of probable Later Neolithic date (2900 - 2150 BC). The arrowhead is lentoid (diamond shaped lozenge) in plan and lentoid in cross section. The arrowhead has been knapped from a light-mid brown orange flint with a series of white flecks in the matrix. It measures 28.3mm length, 19.3mm width, is 4.9mm thick and weighs 2.06 grams. Both faces of the arrowhead have been pressure (ripple) flaked with a series of small neat regular narrow facets. Much of this rippled surface has been flaked with skill. The upper two thirds of both edges (on both faces) exhibit areas of secondary flaking or retouch. This has created two serrated cutting edges. He base of the arrowhead tapers slightly into a slight tang. The tang is not large enough or developed enough to be deliberate and may be a result of repair and re-knapping after an old break. The evidence for this consists of a series of small regular flake facets which overly a series of larger (presumably older) ones. There is slight damage to the arrowhead at the tip, which has been lost. There is also damage from movement in the ploughsoil, but this is minimal.
Flint tools from Shropshire are relatively rare compared to other areas of the country. This flint is likely to have come from a riverine or glacial source if procured locally. This would account for the small size and the use of a naturally flawed piece of flint. This was found in an area with a number of large pieces (chunks) of debitage: see record HESH-ED0686. |
