Summary
[edit]DescriptionNeminatha Tirthankara of Jainism at Vindhyagiri Shravanabelagola Karnataka.jpg |
English: Shravanabelagola is one of the most important pilgrimage sites of Jainism, particularly for its Digambara sect. The site includes two rocky hills on which are historic Jain shrines and temples from the 1st millennium CE. The town has other Jain monuments, as well as Hindu temples with Dravidian gopuram architecture that co-exist with the Jain temples.
The site is most known for its colossal Bahubali (Gommateshwara) statue and for being the place which Digambara tradition believes was the place where Chandragupta Maurya spent last years of his life as a Jain monk and committed Sallekhana (voluntarily end to his life in old age by not eating food or drinking any form of nourishment). The Vindhyagiri hill features several small shrines, the colossal Bahubali statue, numerous inscription rocks from different centuries, as well as a bhandara (storage, library/collection) of historic statues of all 24 Tirthankaras. The temple is active, draws Jain devotees and pilgrims for whom there are nearby dharmashalas. The pilgrims make sacrificial offerings such as rice, flowers, fruits, money, etc and pray. The Jain priests offer aarti, tilaka and other rituals to those who visit for darshana. |
