English: Nelson Monument view of Leopold Place and Windsor Street This photograph shows the only section of the proposed Calton extension to Edinburgh's New Town to be built. Maps from the 1820s show a proposed scheme of broad thoroughfares, grand squares and an elegant crescent between Leith Walk and Easter Road and stretching to below Pilrig. Many of the names of the streets that never materialised had been decided: The Mall, Playfair Street, Trinity Square, Hopetoun Street, Heriot Crescent etc. The names of Hillside Crescent, Brunswick Street, Wellington Street and Montgomery Street were retained among the streets actually built, though on a more modest scale and of a humbler character than first envisaged.
