Notes The style (peripheral fade-out) and quality of the image, and the presence of rails perpendicular to the track on which the locomotive is standing, are consistent with its being the builder's photo produced by Neilson and Company in 1872 or 1873, when the locomotive was being built for the Canterbury Provincial Railways. The railway allocated the number 9. When the railway converted from broad gauge to narrow gauge, the locomotive was sold in 1878 to the South Australian Railways, which allocated the number 38 in I class – of which it was the sole class member. In 1880 or 1881 it was renumbered as 48. Later, this class-of-one became known as the "first I class".
