English Embroidery. 375 purpose. It is woven with an inscription in white on aground of green, backed with pale blue, and the materialis silk. The woven legend is thus translated from theold French— Let him perish who would part us. The term opus Anglicanum is first recorded in thethirteenth century, and is supposed simply to mean English work. But there is also good authority for itshaving been applied, on the Continent especially, to aparticular style of stitchery, of which the Syon cope in theKensington Museum is the best preserved great exampleknown. Its peculiarity consists in its fine split-stitchbeing moulded so as to give the effect of a bas-relief; andthis appears to have been generally reserved for themedallions representing sacred subjects, and especiallyemployed in modelling the faces and the nude parts of thefigures delineated.
