Description

Looking west from the crossing through the nave at the main entrance to St. John the Evangelist Cathedral in Cleveland, Ohio, in the United States.

A shrine to St. Anthony of Padua is to the left rear, and a shrine to St. Thérèse of Lisieux is to the right. Stations of the Cross can be seen on the north (right) and south nave walls.

The pews were installed in 1948, and painted over at some point. In 2016, Henninger's Inc. stripped them down to the wood, and then refinished them and gilded their decorations. The company also refinished the wood wainscoting in the nave, removed a Modernist sculpture hanging over the Tabernacle and replaced it with a 1927 hanging lamp; refinished the reredos, removed the 1948 linoleum from beneath the pews and laid down new porcelain tiles, and affixed new kneelers to each pew.

The cathedral's Holtkamp organ is in the loft above the entrance. Listed as Votteler-Holtkamp-Sparling Opus 8388607 (1948), this electro-pneumatic organ has three manuals and 67 stops. Its 4,368 pipes are in 71 ranks in seven divisions. The Gallery Organ, located in the organ loft, operates 54 ranks and has a non-traditional moveable console. The Chancel Organ is located in a niche behind the cathedra, and operates 18 ranks.

The nave-side doors connecting the vestibule and nave each has a phrase over it: "Laudamus Te" (We Praise Thee), "Benedicimus Te" (We Bless Thee), and "Adoramus Te" (We Adore Thee).
