For a discussion of the pictorial tradition in Navajo weaving see Campbell and Kopp, 1991, p. 56: "The automobile and the pickup truck made their way to the reservation in the 1920s and 1930s, and not surprisingly, these images began to appear in Navajo rugs during that period. Even the airplane with all its evolutions - the biplane, the trimotor, and eventually, in contemporary work, the jet plane and helicopters - were included in pictorial rugs."
