Summary
[edit]DescriptionNautiloid cephalopod (gravel bar clast, Chatham, Ohio, USA).jpg |
English: (centimeter scale)
This sample is from a gravel bar along a creek at Chatham, Ohio. The rock itself is a siltstone or fine-grained sandstone, likely derived from Upper Paleozoic rocks (maybe the Mississippian). The elongated structure is an eroded mold of a nautiloid cephalopod. A nautiloid is a squid-in-a-shell. Modern nautiloids have coiled shells (e.g., www.flickr.com/photos/jsjgeology/24052827562). In the fossil record, most nautiloids have long, straight, slightly tapering shells. The concave-anteriorly internal septae are visible in this fossil - they are walls that divided the originally hollow shell into chambers. Hints of where the siphuncle was are present. The soft-parts of the squid animal itself occupied the living chamber on the left side of the fossil. Classification: Animalia, Mollusca, Cephalopoda, Nautiloidea Provenance: modern fluvial clast derived from Pleistocene glacial drift Locality: gravel bar on the western side of the town of Chatham, northern Licking County, east-central Ohio, USA |
