LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE The Loggerhead Shrike, Butcher Bird, or Mouse Hawk,appears from Florida northward to New York and west-ward to Indiana; from the latter State westward to thePlains and north into Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota,we have a closely allied species described as the migrantshrike; another sub-species, a still hghter form, rangingwest to the Pacific Coast, is called the California shrike. Shrikes are solitary and are seldom abundant, but areeasily observed because of their habit of frequenting con-spicuous places. They resort about thorny hedges alonghighways, so that occasionally several pairs may be observedwithin a distance of half a mile along a country road, andthen one may not encounter another for several miles. Theirpeculiar flight should enable the observer to recognize thebirds, as the white patches on the wings and tail are cons
