3li5 LUNA MOTH. (Tropaea iuna ) Iuj.a. POLYPHEMUS MOTH. (Telea polyphemus.) Pupa. EgE9 ou Maple Leaf. About K Life-size. THE INSECT TRIBE 43 rarity of the moths, as compared with such a common andahnost omnivorous larva as Cecropia. A single moth maylay about one hundred eggs, which are smaller than thoseof Polyphemus. These hatch in about ten to fifteen days,the larva making its escape by eating a circular hole in theshell. Occasionally a young larva may l)e seen crawlingabout for a short time, carrying upon its head or tail theempty shell. The adult larva is about three inches long, of a delicatepale green, a color very difficult to preserve in the deadlarva. Those on the plate have lost this delicate green, andhave become yellow, but shoAv the form perfectly. Thislarva is verj^ much like that of Polyphemus, but may be dis-tinguished from it by possessing a longitudinal pale yellowlateral line, which is not found in Polyphemus.
